Introduction to Design & Architecture: TERM 2 (SAT)
Share:

About this event

At DesignTinkers, children will embark on a 14-week journey (Term 1 & 2) that introduces them to the fundamentals of Design + Architecture through hands-on exploration. They will develop an understanding of design concepts, sustainability, and creative thinking—skills that will last a lifetime! Through sketching and model making, students will be encouraged to transform their creative ideas into tangible, imaginative creations!

Weekly Mini Projects
The 2-hour weekly classes will foster creativity and critical thinking as students test and experiment with new ideas. They will also gain a deeper understanding of how well-designed structures enhance our built environment. Students will work collaboratively, learn about sustainability, and discover how to use resources responsibly, all while having fun with their projects.

Term 1: Designing Homes of the Future (Weeks 1-6)

In Term 1, spanning 6 weeks, students will be introduced to typologies of homes—exploring the different types of dwellings found around the world. They will learn how home designs respond to factors like local climate, site conditions, available materials, regulations, and the needs of homeowners. Students will think outside the box, imagining and designing creative alternatives, from tree houses, mobile homes, homes on water to futuristic homes on Mars. This will be a fun and creative term that challenges students to envision innovative and functional living spaces for the future.

Term 2: Techniques of Drawing & Making (Weeks 7-12)

In Term 2, spanning 8 weeks, Students will learn the basics of architectural plan, elevation and perspective drawing with reference to their home layout. They will get to explore space planning for their dream room and building up their favorite room corner.

Scaling up, they will get to observe and build their own version of an  iconic building and create a perspective drawing of it. Students will learn the building technique of slit and slot to Build a Play Structure and the technique of weaving with natural materials to create an architectural envelope.

Final 2 Weeks: Presenting Their Masterpieces (Weeks 13-14)

In the final two weeks, students will have the opportunity to showcase the work they’ve done throughout the program. In Week 13, they will learn how to create professional presentations that effectively highlight their projects and accomplishments. In Week 14, they will focus on honing their verbal presentation skills, learning how to confidently share and discuss their creative process, ideas, and finished works. This program will also culminate with a open showing, presenting an exciting opportunity for parents to visit and celebrate their child's hard work thus far.

Additionally, this program also equips children with skills highly valued for Direct School Admission (DSA). Students will develop a portfolio of tangible works such as models, sketches, and presentations, which are ideal for showcasing creativity during interviews. By blending science, engineering, math, art, and architecture, they build interdisciplinary skills that stand out, especially as architecture is a less common focus at the primary level. The teamwork, problem-solving, and communication experiences gained here also prepare students for group discussions, helping them shine in DSA applications and beyond.
